And unfortunately, you can’t choose what ads appear on your videos.
Actually, everyone was very supportive of the idea of me having ads on the channel. Some even said that they’d click on the ads to help out!
Ultimately, you need to have a BIG channel with a LOT of views in order to be able to support yourself primarily through ads, especially if you live in an expensive area. And it needs to be consistent.
Don’t think that one viral video is going to make you set for life.
At $3 per 1000 views, you’d need 13m views in a year to make 40k USD. A million+ views a month is quite a tall order.
I could have made almost $6000 from ads on my channel over the past year, but there are classier ways to monetize. It’s not “free money” by any means. Think about what you can provide to the world, then do it. You don’t need a middle man to swoop in and sell their stuff on your videos, just create a great product and it’s better in every single way.
Relying on ads means that you are shackled to Google.

EDIT: As a few people pointed out, YouTube can now put ads on any video not in the partner program. But if you ARE in the partner program, you can still choose.
